Appreciative Enquiry

Back in the summer of 2013, the whole congregation of Cadoxton Methodist Church was invited to take part in something called ‘Appreciative Enquiry’.  This was to equip and enable those taking part to direct the church’s attention, through prayer and bible study, on building up the church by focussing on what Jesus wanted for His church at Cadoxton rather than on what we as the congregation wanted.  In the event only a small handful took part giving up two Saturdays a few weeks apart.

Appreciative Enquiry asked us to ‘Discover’ what works well at Cadoxton, ‘Dream’ what God and His Son Jesus would like the church at Cadoxton to be, ‘Design’ the process and plan how this vision could be implemented and finally, ‘Deliver’ the vision so that the whole church would grow and be blessed as a result.

From February to May 2014, a small task group wrestled with the whole concept and out of many hours of prayer, reading of scripture and waiting on the Lord’s leading, an exciting and vibrant action plan, along with a delivery timescale was born.

Part of the Appreciative Enquiry process was also to stop doing or change things which did not work within the life of Jesus’ church at Cadoxton and the resulting vision we believe will allow God’s glory to be seen in our work and witness within the community of Cadoxton and town of Barry.

Some of the actions to come out of the process are:

Empowered Local Leadership:  All positions of leadership within the church at Cadoxton will be tested against scripture and wrestled with in prayer and a new and exciting concept for Cadoxton is the establishment of a Leadership Team which will work on the same principles as an Eldership (such as in other denominations) in conjunction with the Minister.

Expository Preaching and Teaching:  Biblically based teaching on a Sunday morning to build up and edify the whole congregation so that the church at Cadoxton can ‘be church’ as opposed to just ‘doing church’ and all who experience such teaching will promote kingdom values both in their own lives and when meeting in fellowship.

Mid-Week Church Fellowship:  This is a really exciting new concept with the two ‘traditional’ Home Groups merging from September 2014 and a new fortnightly mid-week fellowship group meeting on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.  This will be an occasion for the whole church to come together and receive good quality Bible teaching and exposition from those known to the Leadership Team able to give such teaching.  This new venture is open to anyone who worships at Cadoxton or anyone who is interested in learning more about what the Bible has to say to us about God and His Son Jesus.  Our Church Fellowship Group page has more details.

There is a lot more that came out of the Appreciative Enquiry process to do with Church Governance and Leadership which will ensure that Cadoxton remains a Jesus-centred church, adhering to Biblical principles and putting God and His Son Jesus at the centre of everything we do.

The Appreciative Enquiry task group believe everything that came out of the process has been inspired by God through His Holy Spirit and we would commend Appreciative Enquiry not just to Cadoxton but to any other church seeking a vision and a fresh approach to the way they do things.

‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.  Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.   Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.’Acts 2 verses 17 & 18
